Horse Training, Terri Braithwaite

Five Fires is pleased to provide young / green horse starting and training with Terri Braithwaite. An accomplished equestrian with decades of experience in both English and Western disciplines. Terri has backed, rehabbed and trained over a hundredof horses over the years.

This winter we were fortunate in having her start our three year old Hanoverian filly Surprise. This couldn’t have gone better and Surprise is now calmly doing walk, trot, canter under saddle with a willing and happy demeanor.

She’s teaching and training out of Five Fires Equestrian Centre on a regular basis. Training rides for boarder horses are $30 per ride. Winter 2018 is full. Limited spaces are available for spring 2018.

Brief Bio

Terri has been riding since she was three years old, and aquired her first pony when she was four (a toss in Shetland with a purchase her mother was making). Terri began teaching and schooling horses as a means of generating extra income during university, for example Fredericton Pony Club, and it slowly became her main focus. After completing her Bachelor’s degree at UNB with a double major Terri continued her equestrian education.

Terri’s earlist mentor was Susan Harrington, who introduced her to dressage and encouraged Terri to approach training with feeling and empathy – bad behavior was addressed at it’s root cause. Terri followed Susan to Ontario, where she became a working student for Level Three Dressage Coach Shirley Giurten for a year at Centaur Riding School.

Returning to Nova Scotia, Terri rode with acomplished dressage coach Joan Stoddoard Rhyno and also met Shirley Klassen, an Arabian trainer and Class A judge. Joan continued Terri’s education in equitation and dressage, and Shirley taught Terri a lot about horse psycology and behavior.

Terri ran her own teaching, training and boarding facility for many years, Standfast Farm. While she’s recently started a new chapter in her life, her passion for riding and training horses continues.

Terri has ridden with the top dressage clinicians to come to the Maritimes for the last few years, and when possible rides with them regularly. Some of these clinicians are:

  • Ingrid Klimke
  • Jaqueline Brooks (regularly)
  • Arthur Kottas (regularly)
